2010 Grandfather Mountain Highland Games - Music in the Celtic Groves PDF Print E-mail
Written by Ron Crowe
Friday, 02 July 2010 21:49

The Grandfather Mountain Highland Games has become known worldwide for bringing today's best Celtic music artists to this 55-year-old event.

Performances are held in the Celtic Groves, representing both musical and geographic diversity - artists as far away as Scotland and Australia, as well as musicians from our own back yard. From traditional tunes to Celtic Rock/fusion to tribal drumming, listeners will experience a wide variety in performances.

This year features returning favorites and new talent with a dash of local flavor. The 2010 Highland Games salutes the 75th anniversary of the Blue Ridge Parkway, featuring regional artists who will highlight the ties between Appalachian roots and Celtic music in one of the three Celtic Groves.

This year's performers are Albannach, The Blessed Blend, Brother, Celtic Connections, Clandestine, Colin Grant Adams, Ed Miller & Friends, Forget-Me-Nots, George Tortorelli, Marcille Wallis, Mother Grove and Teribus.

The Highland Games run from July 8-11 with the music in the Groves going Friday through Sunday, with two evening concerts being presented Friday and Saturday evenings on the main field.

From The Killdares newswire:

"On Friday May 14th we will be joining forces with The American Cancer Society to donate our time as part of an awesome fund-raising and awareness event. We are very proud to be taking part in The Navarro County Relay For Life (Corsicana, TX)…a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. The Killdares will be kicking off the event at 8:00PM, and other bands will continue to play throughout the following 24 hours, keeping the walkers movin’ until 8:00AM the next morning!"

From the GBS Newsletter:

"Londonderry Calling! Get ready, New Hampshire: Great Big Sea will be hitting the Tupelo Music Hall in Londonderry on May 6. Tickets are on sale now!"

From the BROTHER journal:

Angus writes "i'll be in LA for a few days, mixing the live album with guy and working on artwork with the tireless leels. dalbo, drew and i are very excited to have an album that represents the sound we've created over the last 3 years. we'll let you know more on the album as we go. not long now ..."

Angus, of The Young Dubliners wants us to pass the word that:

"We are currently hanging out in Ireland for a few weeks. The weather is surprisingly good despite the terrible forecasts we were getting. The next Ireland trip will take place around this time in 2011 so that is encouraging.

In April I go in for the long awaited knee surgery and will have another 3 weeks or so to chill out and get ready for the May tour. Rebuilt and fighting fit (as much as one can be at my tender age!)

Anyhow, although we have been chillin our tireless agent Rich has been crankin out the gigs for the summer so check out the tour page and see when we might stop in by you. We are nowhere finished booking yet so if you don't see your town or State don't panic yet. We promised to get back to as many places that have been missed over the past few years and that promise is still good.

Okedokey, get back to fiddling the numbers for tax day and we'll see you soon."

The Dropkick Murphys have announced their new tour schedule:

"We are gearing up for the third leg of our "Live On Lansdowne" tour and heading over the pond on Saturday for our shows in Scotland, England & Ireland. More details soon. We hope to see you at one of our shows!"

Stay tuned for more!
